How to Appoint a Registered Agent
As of July 1, 2004, all Massachusetts corporations are required to appoint a registered agent. If you have not already done so, you should do the following:
- Email the Massachusetts Secretary of State at corpcid@sec.state.ma.us to obtain a customer ID number and PIN number.
- Go to http://www.sec.state.ma.us/cor/ and click on "File Online" under "Most Requested."
- Enter your customer ID number and PIN number.
- Find, complete, and submit the form, "Statement of Appointment of Registered Agent."
- The registered agent can be anyone with a Massachusetts address including officers and/or directors of the corporation. The registered office should be the business address.
- Alternatively, you can access a copy of the enclosed form at: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/cor/corpdf/156d501.pdf (PDF file) and mail or fax it to the Secretary of State's office, but there will be a filing fee of $25. Filing electronically as described before is free.
