David J. Cooper, CPA
Four decades of knowledge in taxation for closely held businesses and individuals applied masterfully to current client needs.
When clients or their advisors have a question about tax treatment for a particular transaction or calculating proceeds to shareholders from a business sale, they turn to David Cooper. David oversees the tax department at Walter Shuffain, and he is often brought into conversations that require a deep understanding of tax and business planning, but also family dynamics around wealth transfer issues and estate planning. He is adept at offering different options and walking clients through the potential outcomes that can result in tax savings and protected legacies.
Over the years, David has consulted in a variety of industries, including healthcare, real estate, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, construction and professional services. Applying his knowledge of tax law and standards to the business and individual side of client needs makes him an invaluable advisor to executives, investors, boards and high net worth families.
David understands the tax consequences of the wrong choices regarding entity structuring, M&A, trust administration or shareholder compensation. His ideal is helping clients avoid surprises and keep more money to use for personal and philanthropic fulfillment.
David earned his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Accounting and Finance degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his Master’s in Taxation degree from Bentley University. At Walter Shuffain, he coordinates the continuing education requirements for the firm and our professionals, a mentoring role that he finds particularly fulfilling.
David enjoys bicycling, swimming, boating and traveling. He also spends as much time as possible with his grandkids and children.
I like to help others. Whether I am mentoring other professionals or doing home improvement projects for my family, it’s satisfying to use my talents for their benefit.
