William Cooper wants to immerse himself in the operations of a client’s business so that he can provide the best guidance. Consulting at every level of business formation, development and transitions, William has particular knowledge of pass-through ventures such as medical practices, private equity and venture capital, real estate, manufacturing and wholesale distribution. He anticipates when clients are ready for more sophisticated tax planning, financing, assurance, business expansions and exit planning. He also advises owners and investors on strategies to grow and protect their earnings over time.

With medical practices, William advises on entity structuring, compensation, tax planning needs, roll-ups of multiple practices or strategies to add locations and create economies of scale. Plus, he helps physicians and health care specialists think ahead for wealth management and exit strategies, acting as their go-to advisor to create a trusted team of advisors.

For private equity and venture capital firm clients, William is on call to discuss growth strategies for their holdings, often getting involved during M&A transactions along with required assurance and tax planning. He also works directly with portfolio companies to help management improve operations and valuations.

Within manufacturing and wholesale distribution, William can strategize with management on operational matters such as standard costing and profit margins, establishing and monitoring key performance indicators and how to identify incentives and tax credits. He consults on financing for expansions, M&A deal structuring, how to structure new entities as well as pass-through income treatment and tax planning for owners and investors.

William has more than 30 years of experience in public accounting. This includes early in his career at E&Y and later leading a firm with his father and brother before joining Walter Shuffain. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Lehigh University. He is a Registered Investment Advisor and serves as a trustee for many of his clients. William is a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of CPAs.
